The bladder is an extremely useful organ for our functioning health. To keep you and your bladder in top shape, here are 8 tips to maintain a healthy bladder.

1. Drink plenty of water, around 6 to 8 glasses per day.

Your body uses it to flush out excess bacteria and acids. Without it, urine can become concentrated and your bladder can get irritated.

2. Even though you might be tempted to keep going and hold in your pee – try not to do this.

It can weaken your bladder muscles and increae the chances of getting a bladder infection.

3. Quit smoking.

About half of all people with bladder cancer are current smokers or ex-smokers.

4. Be in a relaxed position while urinating.

Relaxing the muscles around the bladder will make it easier to completely empty the bladder. For women, hovering over the toilet seat may make it hard to relax, so it is best to sit on the toilet seat.

5. Maintain a healthy weight.

Make wise food choices and keep physically active.

6. Urinate after sex.

Both men and women should urinate shortly after sex as this helps flush out bacteria that may have entered the urethra.

7. Tip for women: wipe from front to back.

This helps prevent bacteria from getting into the urethra after using the toilet.

8. Look before you flush.

The colour of urine can indicate various concerns, including bladder cancer. If you “see red” or blood in your urine, talk to your doctor. If symptoms persist, insist on further evaluation to determine whether bladder cancer is present.
